The Histotechnologist provides a variety of laboratory and histology procedures for the Anatomic Pathology Department. Successfully achieves and maintains competencies in all histology laboratory related skills.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrates compliance in laboratory safety policies, procedures, and standards.2. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled.3. Demonstrates knowledge and operation of LIS software, computer programs and equipment.4. Performs routine preventative maintenance and troubleshoots malfunctions on equipment and instrumentation.5. Completes, records, and monitors quality control and quality assurance documentation.6. Reviews and understands standard operating procedures and completes continued education activities.7. Assists with inventory control.8. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the following complex histology duties: tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, coverslipping, microscopy, solution preparation, automated & manual routine and special staining techniques, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and in-situ hybridization techniques.9. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the identification of cell and tissue structures, microorganisms, pigments, and antibody-antigen interactions.10. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in quality control monitoring of control tissue, reagent lots, and staining procedures.11. Demonstrates knowledge in laboratory validation processes.12. Meets or exceeds departmental productivity standards in embedding and microtomy areas.13. Trains others to perform histology responsibilities when assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting up to 6 hours/day in 3-hour incrementsStanding up to 3 hours/day in 1-hour incrementsWalking up to 2 hours/day in 10-minute increments. Rarely carries objects up to 25 pounds.Hearing as it relates to normal conversation.Seeing as it relates to general far/near/color and peripheral vision and depth perception.

EDUCATION:

AS or BS; HT or HTL ASCP Certification preferred

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Previous experience in anatomic pathology preferred.
