Position Summary:

The Optical Technician will be expected to possess and continually develop a broad spectrum of skills. The technician will primarily focus on manufacturing orders but will also work closely with engineering and will have a direct say in process development and continuous improvement decisions. Technicians should be self-motivated and will be required to work unsupervised at times.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work cross functionally in coating, inspection & packaging (I/P), metrology, and potentially fabrication as a part of daily tasks

  • Ability and desire to work on diverse and challenging projects and be an integral part to process development and implementation

  • High precision optics metrology (interferometry, optical part characterization)

  • Cleaning, handling and assembly of optical and opto-electronic components

  • Optical contacting

  • Cleaning and visual inspection of optical components.

  • Proper handling and packaging of critical and fragile optical components.

  • Inventory management of consumables for clean room, manufacturing, and chemical supplies.

  • Procedure enforcement, maintenance, and cleaning of fabrication and clean room areas.

  • Ability to read, follow and understand procedures

  • Documentation and procedure development of manufacturing processes.

  • Actively participate in establishing and improving manufacturing processes procedures

  • Transacts production work orders through ERP

  • Follows all safety training and guidelines

  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor or his/her designate

Fabrication Specific, if applicable:

  • Machining (grinding, lapping and polishing) of glass/silicon/ceramic materials on automated and manual equipment

  • CNC fabrication equipment operation and maintenance

Inspection & Packaging (I/P) Specific, if applicable:

  • Cleans parts prior to and following deposition of coatings or during other manufacturing steps using both hand cleaning and spin cleaning

  • Cleans and inspects glass and crystal parts and assemblies

  • Packages parts for shipment to customer

  • Loads and unloads complex parts into fixturing

  • Inspects parts and measures defect sizes against MIL specifications

Coating Specific, if applicable:

  • Operates vacuum coating equipment to produce optical thin films

  • Loading and unloading of coating equipment

  • Cleans and maintains coating equipment

  • Calculates various parameters for coating runs from previously recorded data

  • Performs spectrophotometer scan and analysis

  • Troubleshoots vacuum systems

Experience / Skills / Abilities:

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment preferred

  • Experience working with optical components a plus

  • Familiarity with clean room and ESD safe environments constraints a plus

  • Familiarity with microscope inspection techniques a plus

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks requiring exacting and continuous mental and visual concentration in a consistent manner

  • Proficient with basic computer use (Word, Excel) and communication tools (e-mail)

  • Strong work ethic

  • Desire to learn new skills

  • Team player with solid communication skills

Requirements:

This position may require lawful access to ITAR/EAR controlled information and employees in this role will need to meet those requirements. Requirements include US Citizenship, US Permanent Resident or ability to meet contract-specific licensure requirements.

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $40,200.00 - $60,400.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
