Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

NREL conducts world-class energy research in the public interest. Nestled in the foothills of Golden, Colorado, surrounded by grassland, and convenient to Denver, Boulder, and several suburbs, the NREL campus is a living experiment filled with curious researchers and advanced energy technologies (e.g., improve the nation's electrical grid infrastructure, making it more flexible, reliable, resilient, secure, and sustainable, MW-scale hybrid power plants, optimized electric vehicle charging, hydrogen fueling station).

The successful candidate will work in Golden with an interdisciplinary team of experienced NREL researchers to design, develop, and validate power electronic converters as well as the associated controls for widespread integration of renewable energy sources to the power systems.

The Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is inviting applications for a internship position to work on government and industry sponsored research in the area of Electro Magnetic Transient modeling of power systems. The researcher should have experience in the broad area of power system modeling using Electro Magnetic Transient simulation tools (EMTP-RV, PSCAD) with specific focus on high fidelity, high frequency modeling of power system components including overhead lines, underground cables, and inverter-based resources for studying their impacts on power system transients. Basic experience in power systems design, planning and modeling, along with related programming experience in python to plot data.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Working with NREL research engineers to build models for distribution systems.

  • Perform PSCAD/EMT simulations.

  • Document the work done within internship into a peer-reviewed paper.

  • Following all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Document the completed work on a regular basis

  • Work independently to investigate and/or conduct, test, and document research and experiments

  • Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations

  • Publish results in technical journals and conference proceedings

  • Follow all Environmental, Safety, and Health policies to ensure and maintain a safe working environment

The hiring team for this position prefers an intern who can work remotely from within the US. Ideally the intern would work for 12+ months at 40 hours/week during breaks and at least 20 hours/week during semesters. However, a summer internship is also possible.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution. 


Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.


Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution. 


Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Must be recent BS, MS graduate (Ph.D. Students are highly preferred).

  • Research experience developed through coursework, work, or independent study.

  • Software skills: Python, pandas, plotly, PSCAD, or one of the EMT tools (PSCAD, EMTP-RV, RSCAD, etc).

  • Must be willing to document the work performed both in the software files and as separate text files.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in Power Electronics or Power Systems.

  • Experience with one of the Electro Magnetic Transient simulation tools (EMTP-RV, PSCAD) is highly desirable.

  • Experience with analysis of transient performance of power system with high shares of inverter-coupled resources.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,000 - $54,400

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
