Robert Half is seeking an insurance defense attorney for a prominent law firm in Oakland County

Insurance Defense Attorney Job Description

Summary:

An insurance defense attorney represents insurance companies in legal matters related to claims filed against their policyholders. They work to minimize the financial liability of the insurance company by investigating claims, negotiating settlements, and litigating cases in court when necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate claims: Analyze legal documents, police reports, medical records, and other evidence to assess the validity and extent of a claim.

  • Conduct legal research: Research relevant laws, case precedents, and insurance policies to determine the legal arguments and potential defenses available to the insurance company.

  • Develop legal strategy: Formulate a defense strategy based on the investigation and legal research, considering options like settlement negotiations, mediation, or litigation.

  • Negotiate settlements: Engage in negotiations with opposing counsel to reach a fair and cost-effective settlement for the insurance company.

  • Prepare legal documents: Draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and other legal documents necessary for litigation.

  • Litigate cases: Represent the insurance company in court, presenting arguments, questioning witnesses, and managing all aspects of the trial process.

  • Communicate effectively: Maintain clear and consistent communication with clients (insurance companies), claims adjusters, opposing counsel, and the court.

  • Stay up-to-date: Continuously research and learn about changes in insurance law, relevant case precedents, and industry best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Bar admission in the relevant state(s).

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in insurance defense litigation.

  • Strong analytical and research skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Strong negotiation and advocacy skills.

  • Proficient in legal research databases and case management software.

    Requirements - Above-average academic credentials and references

  • Strong communication and social skills and able to receive criticism well

  • Knowledge of personal injury defense

  • Insurance defense experience

  • Attention to detail and ability to follow standard procedures is a requirement

  • Licensed attorney

  • Able to handle multiple assignments, work well under pressure, and have the flexibility to assist the team in meeting client demands on accelerated schedules

  • Must possess analytical, legal research and writing skills
