Our beautiful Gulf Gate Library is in need of a skilled Librarian capable of coordinating or leading Youth Services programs/projects, performing analytical type work and coordinating collections. While the primary focus will be leadership in Youth Services, you may also work with teens and adults in intergenerational programming.

About the Position

In this role you will:

  • Implement standards of service, as a representative of Sarasota County to library users, ensuring the prompt and efficient resolution of inquiries with the utmost courtesy and respect.

  • Establish liaisons and perform outreach activities with organizations, agencies, day cares, schools, and home school providers in the community to creatively promote library services and facilitate programming and service delivery.

  • Keep abreast of developments, trends, best practices, and innovations in libraries.

  • Create a user-friendly and safe environment; assessing risk and safety issues.

  • Interpret objectives, policies and procedures for staff and for the public.

  • Participate in and/or facilitate trainings, community meetings, and activities of the Library Advisory Board, Friends Alliance, Friends of the Library, etc.

  • Conduct presentations to BCC, community and at professional events.

  • Provide formal/informal instruction to individuals/groups on use of library resources, learning tools, etc.

  • Initiate, design, facilitate and evaluate education and literacy programs; collaborating on activities and programs related to identified branch and community goals with an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math).

  • Write and develop book reviews, promotional materials, fliers, book lists, and web content.

  • Assist in material selection and weeding.

  • Make acquisition recommendations consistent with policy.

  • Administer special collections.

  • Maintain awareness of literature related to current best practices and future trends.

  • Integrate research and monitor patterns and trends into planning process.

  • Assist, lead, develop, implement, and/or evaluate special projects, services and library programs.

  • Compile and analyze statistical, budgetary and other information and reports.

  • Provide opportunities for continuing professional development of self and others, especially in acquiring relevant understanding and skills.

Work Hours:

  • Full-Time, 40 hours per week.

  • Must be available to work: Sunday - Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

  • Work schedules may vary due to split shifts, rotations, on-call, emergencies, etc.

  • Employee may be re-assigned to a different work location (other than original assignment) within the library system to meet changing service needs.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.

  • -OR- Bachelor's degree and enrolled in a MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain a MLS/MLIS within twelve (12) months of hire.

  • Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in a library environment.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
