JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (https://www.eecs.psu.edu/departments/EECS-Departments-Computer-Science-Engineering3.aspx) at Penn State is seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Scholar to join our research team in the field of computational biology. This position is aimed at developing new algorithms for important biomedical problems by utilizing deep learning on biomedical knowledge graphs.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will primarily focus on the following specific aims of the project:

  • Enhance the KGML-xDTD model, a machine learning-based drug repurposing framework, to improve scalability, enrich explanation paths, and improve mechanism-informed predictions. The goal is to support Every Cure's objective of achieving an "all drugs vs all diseases" ranking of drug repurposing targets.

  • Optimize KGML-xDTD's computational efficiency and resource utilization.

  • Utilize natural language processing (NLP) techniques to extract textual descriptions of mechanisms of action (MOA).

  • Incorporate example paths to improve the accuracy of model predictions and provide contextually relevant understanding of predicted relationships.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, statistics, or a related field by the start of the appointment.

  • Strong background and expertise in machine learning, knowledge graphs, and automated reasoning agents.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C, Rust, or similar.

  • Experience in developing and implementing algorithms in computational biology or related domains.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Additional Information:

This is a term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with a possibility of renewal.
