    Qualifications

    Registered Nurse (RN) Job Requirements:

    • Assesses patients with difficult access or need for long term IV therapy for appropriate vascular access device. o Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers and other team members to insure early assessment for VAD selection and implementation. • Participates in education with Vascular Access education with patient, family members and staff • Reviews physicians order • Obtains consent • Reviews medical records for any contraindications of peripheral vascular access • Determines the best vascular access device for the patient based on medications, current access status, diagnoses, length of IV therapy and etc. • Places said vascular access device, (PICC, Midline, Peripheral) or recommends alternate means of access. o Reports directly to patients’ primary nurse and charge nurse or physician, if necessary. • Troubleshoots difficult complications of VAD’s or assists staff in troubleshooting. • Declot VAD’s or assists staff as a resource in declotting. • Places difficult peripheral IV’s with or without ultrasound as needed • Provides staff education on: o Care and management o Complication management • Document completely and accurately in the patient’s permanent medical record

    Role and Responsibilities

    The Vascular Access Nurse provides consultation for providers and nurses for the most appropriate vascular access device based on patient assessment and the treatment plan. Places vascular access devices such as: peripheral intravenous catheters (PIV), Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters (PICC), Midline catheters. Assesses and manages central venous access devices including routine dressing changes, cap changes and intervenes to maintain patency of central venous access devices. Serves as a resource for the health care team in the intravenous access, placement, management, and patient/family education for care and maintenance. Service area is both inpatient and outpatient. Requires demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and physiology of central line placement/peripheral vascular, aseptic technique, ultrasound machines and ability to confirm line placement via chest x-ray successful placement of PICC. / Placement verification device.
